For more than four centuries, Presbyterians have responded to the call of Jesus Christ by sharing the gospel, serving communities in need, and bearing witness to Christ’s love throughout the world.

From the organization of the first American presbytery in 1706 to the founding and support of schools, colleges, hospitals, and mission efforts, Presbyterians have long valued education, faithful service, thoughtful discipleship, and active participation in public life.

Presbyterians believe that God’s grace is freely given through Jesus Christ.

We do not earn God’s love. We receive it.

Because of that grace, every Christian is called to share the Good News, grow in faith, care for others, and serve faithfully in the world.

This understanding of grace encourages humility, gratitude, compassion, and a willingness to keep learning together.

The word Presbyterian comes from a Greek word meaning elder.

Presbyterian churches are governed through shared leadership rather than by one individual acting alone. Each congregation is led by a body called the Session, made up of elected ruling elders and pastors, who are also known as teaching elders.

Together, they pray, listen, discern, and make decisions on behalf of the congregation.

Deacons may also be elected and ordained to ministries of compassion, care, and service.

This representative form of leadership reflects our belief that wisdom is best discerned prayerfully and faithfully in community.

The mission of the Presbyterian Church is reflected in the Six Great Ends of the Church:

• The proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind
• The shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God
• The maintenance of divine worship
• The preservation of the truth
• The promotion of social righteousness
• The exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world

These historic commitments continue to shape Presbyterian worship, mission, teaching, and service today.

Presbyterians believe that faith calls us to care about both spiritual and physical needs.

The church encourages Christians to work toward:

• protecting the dignity of every person
• serving neighbors with compassion
