The “Doubting Thomas” rotation runs May 31 – August 30, 2015.
The faithful disciple, Thomas, was labeled “doubting” at his greatest test of faith. He was willing to go to Jerusalem and die with his Lord, but he couldn’t believe the unbelievable. After the resurrection, all of the disciples except Thomas had seen Jesus in the flesh. Thomas lived in doubt for a whole week until Jesus appeared out of nowhere and said, “Peace be with you.” Recognizing Thomas’s doubt, Jesus offered to let Thomas touch him. At that moment Thomas received his revelation and responded, “My Lord and my God.”
Thomas came to his faith through firsthand experience with the Risen Christ. The testimony of the disciples was recorded in scripture so that subsequent believers could come to faith. Jesus said to Thomas, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”
When we make the jump of faith, the scriptures illuminate how to walk a path that invites the living God to journey with us throughout our lives. God’s presence transforms us, making us active workers in God’s kingdom. We become witnesses to the resurrection even without experiencing it firsthand.
The memory verse is: John 20:29
Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”
