We are happy to report that our Read & Feed program was a great success for our fifth year! We hosted 30 second and third grade readers from area elementary schools who had been identified as needing assistance with reading. We hoped to “jump-start” their fall schooling by providing them with six mornings of reading experiences as well as food for breakfast and lunch. We used most of our church to have the students read to us or to trained dogs, to have us read to them, to play word games, to sing songs and play games using music, to create various craft and science projects, and to have lots of fun! We served them breakfast and lunch as well as sent food home for them and their siblings. We also sent them home filled with books and, new this year, backpacks for school via the Deacon’s project.
Parents were overwhelmingly positive about the program. All of the students were excited and enthused to participate.
We want to thank the nearly 50 volunteers from our church and St. Jude’s who made this outreach possible. Thank you to our congregation for their support of our mission budget that enables this type of outreach. We also want to thank Home Depot for supplying craft projects as well as volunteers to assist in their assembly. Thanks also go to Jet’s Pizza and Uncle Ray’s Dairyland for contributing the food for our final lunch; it was a HUGE hit with the students!
Ten volunteers from our church traveled to the North End Soup Kitchen in Flint on Saturday, June 25, to prepare and serve a lunch to people in crisis. We served about 70 lunches. Everyone was very appreciative and we enjoyed our time together.
We had another very successful blood drive at our church this June. Most of the donors used the new Rapid Pass system very successfully. After a very busy start at 9 am, the arriving donors were processed very promptly the rest of the day. We had 43 people come to donate and 39 units were donated. We express our sincere appreciation to the blood donors as well as to the Boy Scouts for setting up and taking down the equipment and to the various volunteers from our church who supplied cookies and hosted the event. We especially thank Norma Witten for organizing our blood drives for over 20 years.
Tri-County Christmas In Action performed significant home repairs to a Fenton Township house owned by a senior with disabilities on Saturday, April 30, 2016. Ten adults and eight youth volunteers from our church worked at the house on Main Road. Our team helped to paint the outside of the home, stain the front deck, clean the home, repair the downspouts, weed the planting areas and spread mulch. Other volunteers at the house moved the laundry room from the basement to the main floor, installed a shower in the bathroom and installed a new kitchen ceiling fan. The homeowner was very appreciative!
Fun and fellowship, delicious food, and presentations from Session and Deacons all made the 2016 New Member Dinner a big success! All our new members from last April to this April were feted and celebrated and appreciated! The involvement of our new members in the life of our church is exciting to see! Here’s to many happy, productive, fun times ahead!
On a balmy winter day, our members shared their Christmas Joy with the community and helped the Salvation Army raise some money so that more local families could enjoy Christmas. Our members smiled, sang Christmas carols and greeted shoppers at VG’s on Silver Lake Parkway as well as at WalMart on Saturday, December 12, from 9am – 8pm. We were again impressed with the generosity of our community through their donations to the red kettle. The mission committee wants to sincerely thank the many volunteers for making a difference in our community!
We want to thank the 54 people who showed up to donate their blood, the 47 people who were able to donate, the Boy Scouts for assisting in setting up and packing up the equipment, the members who made cookies and the members who hosted the drive on Saturday, December 5. The weather was great and the walk-in donations increased because the StreetScape is complete and the JingleFest event was in progress.
What a delightful time being part of the Fenton Chamber of Commerce’s “An Event So Good… It’s Scary!” We even had our church’s own Mayor of Halloweenville join others from the congregation as we gave away nearly 800 pieces of Halloween candy to children in the community on October 30th. Being a downtown church gives us the opportunity to join in many of the local activities.
On Saturday, July 11, 2015, our church supported the Bastille Day Race in downtown Fenton. Each year, this race has generated over $18,000 for the Genesee County Habitat for Humanity chapter and brought thousands of visitors into Fenton. This year the race course was modified due to the downtown construction with the StreetScape project. The 15k race began at 7:45 am while the 5k run/walk began at 8:00 am. Both races were wrapping up by 10:00 am. Food and entertainment were available at the O’Donnell Park.
Our church supplied nine volunteers who assisted with traffic control at five neighborhood corners. Thank you to the volunteers for assisting in this worthwhile cause. Everyone had a great time!
